What we believe

As a member of the Presbyterian Church of Australia:

  • Our supreme standard is the Word of God, being the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
  • Our subordinate standard is the Westminster Confession of Faith, as amended by the General Assembly of Australia, and read in the light of the Declaratory Statement contained in the Basis of Union.

Our Statement of Faith

We believe that there is One God who is the Creator and Judge of the world. In the fullness of time He has revealed Himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit

  • God has made Himself known in His infallible word, the Bible.
  • We believe that human beings are created in God’s image. However, when Adam sinned, that image was stained and tarnished. We inherit Adam’s fallen nature.
  • The penalty for sin is death, leading ultimately to the second death which is everlasting judgement.
  • The law reveals that we are sinners but does not save us.
  • Christ is the Lord from heaven who came to lead a sinless life, and offer Himself up as the sinless sacrifice to pay the death penalty which we deserve.
  • We cannot earn salvation. We can only receive it when the Holy Spirit enables us to have faith in Christ alone.
  • Trusting in Christ and not our own merits, we seek to live godly lives, loving God and our neighbour.
  • We seek to serve Christ in the fellowship of the body of His people, the Church. Our joining this body is signified by baptism, our ongoing commitment to Christ is signified by taking part in the Lord’s Supper.

Our Distinctive Features

Expository Preaching

We affirm the inerrancy (Num 23:19), infallibility (Luke 16:17; John 10:35) and inspiration (2 Tim 3:16) of all Scripture — every word — and therefore we take seriously the need for verse-by-verse, expository (exposing the meaning of the text) preaching. We want everyone to encounter the whole counsel of God. Sermons are prayerfully and carefully prepared through a study of the literary form, grammar, biblical context and historical context, which much thought given on how to explain and apply the meaning of the passage. We mostly work through one book of the bible before moving onto another, although occasionally at seasonal times we might preach from a passage relevant to the season, for example Easter and Christmas.

Families in Church

We affirm the sanctity of the family and encourage parents in their primary responsibility to bring up their children in the training and instruction of the Lord (Eph 6:4). Families should not stop being families when in church. The Apostle Paul addressed children directly in the congregation (Eph 6:1; Col 3:20). Therefore we do not have a Sunday School or “Kids Church” which takes children away from their parents during our morning service. Instead we encourage children of all ages to remain with their parents and to learn with them during the service. A comfortable cry room with audio-visual link is available if parents need to take young children out during the service.
